“When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”
Poor lemons. They’re so villainized in this popular scenario. As if to say, “well, you got handed something pretty bad. Make the most of it.”
And then there are those times that it feels like everything is going so badly that life won’t even bother to hand you one simple lemon.
But here’s the thing- there’s a different way to look at those sweetly sour little yellow fruits. You see, life really only HAS TO offer you two things: breath and environment. So when life hands you a lemon, see it as a gift! A tool in a giant DIY life project.
When life won’t hand you a lemon, go find a tree and pick your own!
This is the premise for a new series that I’m really excited about. It’s called “The Lemon Tree.”
The Lemon Tree Series will be all about helping you change your mindset and encouraging your pursuit of an authentic life. I’m so excited to take this journey with you!!
This is about YOU.
This is about BEING.
This is about THINKING IN A DIFFERENT WAY.
To get the ball rolling, I’ve compiled a list of 10 things to consider when picking your lemons:
1. BE PROACTIVE
This is a challenge for a lot of people. You have to rely on yourself and your motivation. You can’t wait for someone to do things with you. YOU are responsible for the choices you make, and the amazing changes that come with that!
2. BE ORGANIZED
If you’re a list person, make lists. If you’re a planner, make plans. If you have piles and piles of filing disguised as chaos, pile away! But use your organizing super powers to your advantage!
3. BE MOTIVATED
Maybe a no-brainer. But nothing new comes from doing the same things over and over again. Be motivated to do the things you want to do! And let that motivation drive you to a point that NOT pursuing your new project is no longer an option. You MUST do it. Let that drive you!
4. BE OPEN TO FAILURE
Failure. It’s not cool. Or fun. But chances are, it’s going to happen at some point. Very rarely is success a linear path. Failure can be a simple misstep. Failure can be a do-over. Failure can be a single step on a grand staircase.
Failure. Failure. Failure.
Have you ever noticed that the more you say a word, the less meaning it seems to have? Absorb the shock factor. Then keep on going until it’s just another word with little meaning.
5. BE OPEN TO CHANGING YOUR MIND
If you’re like me, the world offers a lot of things that interest you. That’s awesome! Pursue as many things as you want in this life! Society dictates we select a straight and narrow path, and follow it to completion. Just like everyone else. Consequently, bucket lists happen, and “someday” becomes the token phrase for things that will never happen. Steer off the path! Enjoy the road less taken! Live a life that has society scratching their heads. Allow “changing your mind” to be a point of excitement, not anxiety.
6. BE ALWAYS SEARCHING
This isn’t to say you should never be content with what you have. On the contrary, it’s about allowing yourself to keep growing. The key to healthy roots is strengthening the whole, and cultivating a healthy environment.
7. BE IN LOVE WITH LEARNING
You’re never too old. It’s never impossible. It’s easy to be afraid of learning something new. It’s easy to let that fear paralyze you into sticking with what you have. Love learning! Love the process. NOTHING bad comes from learning new things!!
8. BE PATIENT
Life takes time. It takes cultivation. It takes courage. And it takes ENDLESS SUPPLIES OF PATIENCE. Because life is hard!! But it’s a PROCESS, not an ENDGAME. Be patient, and enjoy the process. When life gets hard, which it inevitably will, focus on what CAN be. That’s how we cultivate hope!
9. BE WILLING TO PICK YOUR LEMONS
Stop waiting for life to hand you lemons and an instruction manual on what to do with them! Go find a lemon tree, and pick your own lemons! Choose your own adventure! There’s enough lemonade in the world- go make a pie instead!
10. BE ABOUT YOU AND YOUR SUCCESS
There is an overwhelming mentality these days that everything you do should be to serve others. That if you devote your life to other people, you will be fulfilled and happy. That being “selfish” is a horrible, horrible thing to be tagged.
Yes, if you spend your whole life never thinking about anyone but yourself, and have no social attachments in your world, you’re potentially a psychopath. On the flip side, you’re not Mother Teresa. Every life needs an element of selfishness to thrive. Your light truly does start to shine when you feed your need for growth!
11. BE AMAZING
Because you are. Regardless of what you do, or how you do it, you are inherently amazing. I’m not talking about “you get a medal just for showing up,” but really, nobody else in the entire world is quite the same look of amazing as you. Own it! Seeing the amazingness that you are is the first step in constructing a life you’re excited about!
What has helped you achieve a life of individuality and success?
I hope you’ll join me for future inspirations from The Lemon Tree!
